Two Year Blogiversary (and an important question for readers)

Starlight and Saucepans has been gracing us with its presence for longer than you might think (certainly longer than I would have thought) – start the applause, because today is my two year blogiversary!

(I shan’t ramble for long, but if you’re not particularly interested in the blogiversary celebrations, please do just scroll to the end of the post to see my question for readers. I want Input.)

I’ve very much enjoyed this last year in the blogging community. In Starlight and Saucepans’ first year, the blogging world seemed like a bit of a lonely place – I didn’t know many bloggers, partly due to the fact that there simply weren’t that many bloggers in my niche. I was perched on my little bloggerly island, and occasionally I would wade out to another bloggerly island or lovely people would wade to me from their islands, but it was rather an isolated business.

But this year, due to interacting more with bloggers, meeting new people, and new blogs popping into existence, I’ve felt much more a part of the blogging community. And it’s been a blast discovering new friends, chatting with you all, discussing stories with you and getting new perspectives on them. I want to sincerely thank every one of you who comments, who follows my blog, and who reads my posts. It means so much to me. <3 (I especially want to thank my newly-acquired blogging friends Astrya, Emi, and Ruth – I’ve so enjoyed getting to know you ladies this past year!)

Now for some stats-sharing, since That’s What You Do. They’re not exactly mind-blowing, but did you really click on this post to have your mind blown?

So…yes! Thank you all so much; I’m so grateful for your visiting my little corner of the Internet!

Oh, but you can’t go quite yet. Sorry. First I have to ask you my important question.

For a long time I’ve been wanting to do a period drama game in which I put up screencaps and quotes and you readers try matching them/guessing what period drama they’re from and the characters speaking. I got the idea from the archives of other (sadly now inactive) period drama blogs, and it looks great fun. I think that would be a lovely way to celebrate the momentous and earth-shattering occasion of my blogiversary. However, it’s not really a game you can do with one person, so I can’t do it unless some of you are interested.

So my question for you is this: if I were to set up a game of matching period drama screencaps and quotes, would you be interested in playing? (If you would be interested but don’t feel comfortable commenting on a public blog, please feel free to send me an email at lizziehexam@starlightandsaucepans.org . Either to play the game and/or to express interest in the game.)

There, now I’m really done.

Now go off and party and enjoy yourself, because a two year blogiversary doesn’t happen just any day!

  1. 🎉 Congratulations, Lizzie! Happy anniversary to Starlight & Saucepans! I’m so thankful for you and your blog ❤️

YES. I would *adore* it if you revive the old blogging games!

(Oh, and the GIFs are hilarious. I don’t really do TV shows, but . . . Lizzie, you are tempting me 😂)

    • Lizzie Hexam

Aw, thank you so much! <3 And the same to you! (you know, minus the anniversary)

Lovely! Even if there aren't that many people involved, I bet it'd still be a lot of fun 😀

(Heh, well, tempting people to wondrous things is one of my favorite things to do 😉 If you ever want more information/any kind of content advisory (not that there's much content to advise about) I'd be happy to provide!)

      • Perhaps we could start with Wodehouse in general, because I am (. . . in theory *cough* . . .) a book-comes-first girl. I know he was a prolific writer; which of his books would you recommend starting with (or *not* starting with XD)?

        • Lizzie Hexam

Well, that is the proper way to do it 😉 But also a hard question to answer, since he was, as you say, exceedingly prolific, and picking favorites is always hard in any case. I’m going to pretty much copy-and-paste what I told Astrya on this subject a few months ago, actually, because I went through great effort then thinking through what I’d suggest, and my opinions should hopefully not have changed too much in two months 😛

For non-Jeeves and Wooster-Wodehouse, I think Fish Preferred (alternate title is Summer Lightning; for some reason most P.G. Wodehouse books have two different names) would be a good starter. It’s in the middle of the Blandings Castle series, but I read it before I read any other Blandings books and I didn’t feel confused or like I was missing a lot of context.

For Jeeves and Wooster, Right Ho Jeeves might be a good one…it’s an earlier one where I don’t think the characterization is completely pegged yet (both Bertie and Jeeves are more annoying than they should be), but it does introduce some important recurring characters. The Mating Season might be a good one too…oh, but Jeeves in the Offing is one of my favorites…HELP. This is hard. 😛

(And current-me would also add that Very Good, Jeeves could be a good starter too – it’s a collection of short stories, not a novel, but it does give you an introduction to our heroes and the J&W universe. Also, the first story in it is one of my very favorites. I even began translating it into Latin as a school project once. :P)

And there is the occasional mild language (including some using of the Lord’s Name as an exclamation, unfortunately)/an occasional comment I could do without in Wodehouse, but nothing at all bad. I don’t think there’s anything worse than what you might find in, say, a Code era Hollywood movie.

Hopefully all that was actually helpful and didn’t just confuse the issue even more 😛

  2. Congratulations, Lizzie! I’m so grateful to have “met” you, and your blog is always a source of literary nourishment and great fun.

(And yes, the bloggish games would be great fun!)

    God bless!

    • Lizzie Hexam

Thank you so much! I’m so glad to have met you too <3

I think I will have to try out hosting one 😀

      God bless!

  3. Congratulations on your blogiversary, Lizzie!!! That’s amazing! Good for you. 🙂 By the way, I don’t know exactly how to play the game you were discussing, but if I knew how, I’m sure it would be fun! I think you should try it!

    • Lizzie Hexam

Thank you so much!! <3 And thanks for your interest in the game; I'll include rules for the game when I put it up (and of course if I don't explain them clearly, feel free to ask for clarification! ;))

  4. Eva

🎉A big congrats, Lizzie!!! You deserve it!🥳
I’m looking forward to all the great things and posts in store for your blog to come!

Thank you so much!! <3 I look forward to continuing to read your blog too ;)

  5. Emi

I believe I shall turn in my usual length of comment. It looks extremely probable, seeing as I have already written it and merely came back to the topmost line to say this😆
But getting on with the actual comment….

It is a relief to see 21 as a date on at least one of these comments, being, as I am, most incredibly late😆 Ohh but Lizzie, I am sorry…. I read it once upon the day it was published, and then life dashed me off to Places Outside Of Proper Wifi Range for the en masse moving of Large Stuff from The Place It Was Kept to Home Base…. And I just today remembered I forgot to Truly Comment😬😳 Is it much too late to add my voice to that of the general public and say Yes Very Please to this proposed game??? Because it sounds to me to be exactly the sort of thing I should very greatly enjoy, and I approve of this plan thoroughly!

🥳🥳Congratulations on achieving Second Yeardom, Lizzie, and oh, may you celebrate a great many more anniversaries in the years to come!!! Also I am Extremely Glad you did stick it out that first year (; I might very well have gone altogether without knowing you existed if you had not, (scary thought) seeing as I didn’t discover you until the present one…. And that simply would not do at all! Not one bit.

    • Lizzie Hexam

Well, I just left A Comment of Length on your blog, so it evens out 😉

No worries at all! Life has a habit of dashing us away sometimes; that is its way, and we can not be blamed for it. And it is not too late to add your voice at all; I’m so glad there is interest for the bloggish games! You don’t know how long I’ve been wishing to do one. I’ll try to get it up tomorrow if I have the time 😀

Aww, thank you so much! I’m Extremely Glad I stuck out that first year as well, and grateful that I got to meet you! <3
