This will be a very short post…which has been more the norm than the exception these days, I’m afraid, when I post at all. I apologize. (I would at this juncture make glowing promises of all the long in-depth posts I’ll be putting up soon, but as I expect that would be more optimistic than accurate, I shall refrain.)
In this post, I just wanted to share a poem that I wrote. I usually don’t like my poems, and they usually for that reason stay in dark and deep obscurity…but I actually did rather like this one. I wrote it over a year ago for a poetry class, and all this time later I still like it. Which is unusual for this sort of thing.
So, I’ll stop rambling and share the poem, shall I?
Tiny Things
A tiny stone is knocked into a lake,
And ripples form a thousand times the size.
A little motion and a thundโring shake;
An avalanche is formed before your eyes.
So tiny things can make a lasting mark,
And insignificance become immense;
A cut initial grows into the bark,
The smallest sapling grows and breaks the fence.
And so a thoughtless word or thoughtless deed
Can leave a mark un-thought of at the time,
A friend feel pushed away in time of need,
Or feel forgiveness is denied this time.
If things are changed with such appalling ease,
Letโs give the tiny things to Him Who sees.

That’s wonderful, thank you Lizzie!
Thank you, Magister!
Ohhhh my goodness, Lizzie… That… Is so beautiful. Full of a quiet wisdom and it touches the heart. I’m so glad you shared it, this was such a lovely surprise ๐ I didn’t know you were a poet!
Oh, I’m so glad you liked it! (You know how it is; as soon as I decided to share it, I began to look more askance at it xD) I wouldn’t say that I’m a poet in the general run of things…but every once in a very long while inspiration just strikes one (;
I do know, isn’t that just the way with things like that?? But I’m so glad you shared the poem in spite of it ๐
Just when a poem presents itself to you, eh? You know, I think that’s how it works for everyone that writes them, which qualifies you in my books๐
Hi Lizzie!
Such a lovely poem – you are very good at the artform. ๐
I wrote a little poetry for a class in junior year of high school, but I haven’t really written any since.
My favorite poets would be: Shelley, Byron, and Longfellow.
Have a great week!
Thank you, I’m so glad you liked it! ๐ I’ve read shamefully little of any of those poets (though I do of course love Longfellow’s “I Heard the Bells”); perhaps that should be remedied…
Same to you! (Well, at this point I’ll say have a great weekend :P)
Don’t apologise for lengths of posts, Lizzie! Even your very shortest posts are quality over quantity – this poem being absolutely no exception! I love it!!
I had to write some poetry for classes a few years ago and some of it worked and some didn’t! I love Shakespeare, Donne, and Wordsworth. I used to like Shelley and Byron, but then I found out more about them and couldn’t separate the men from the poems, so went off them a bit. How about you? What are some of your favourites?
Aw, thank you so much! ๐ Heh, “some of it worked and some didn’t” pretty much describes my poetry writing as well…
I’ve read a fair bit of Donne’s religious poetry, and really liked it! And of course Shakespeare is fantastic. Gerard Manley Hopkins and Richard Wilbur are a couple of my favorites, and though I haven’t read much else of hers I love the short Emily Dickinson poem “Tell all the truth but tell it slant;” have you read it?
Ooh, I’d forgotten Gerald Manley Hopkins! I love his poems… I have to confess that I’ve never read any of Richard Wilbur, so that’s one to look into. I’ve read a few Emily Dickinson poems, but never that one – I’m going to look it up right now!
I hope you like Wilbur! He’s more obscure, but I think he’s quite good…one of my favorites of his is October Maples, Portland. And I hope you like the Dickinson poem, too! ๐
I am *dreadfully* late, but I also wanted to say a thank-you for sharing your poem, Lizzie! That’s very brave of you ๐ I love the sound and flow of the opening stanza, especially.
I’m taking a poetry class right now! I’m still on something of a T. S. Eliot kick myself, but the class is making my poets-to-read list longer and longer ๐
Thank you! Heh, I’d noticed that you seem to be on rather a T.S. Eliot kick ;P I bet…poetry classes have a way of doing that, don’t they?
