Last autumn I made a post with seasonal moodboards and aesthetics for various stories, and I thought it might be rather fun to continue the series and do a winter moodboards post as well. (I presented these as period drama themed last time, but this time only one is a period drama; the other two are fantasies. That is just the way it Happened.)
The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis

Something cold and soft was falling on her. A moment later she found that she was standing in the middle of a wood at night-time with snow under her feet and snowflakes falling through the air.
consultations by candlelight // walking through snowy woods // soft fur coats // satyrs and fauns dancing in the moonlight // frozen rivers and snow-laden branches // drinking tea with old friends // horns and shining swords
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

What good times they had, to be sure. Such plays and tableaux, such sleigh
rides and skating frolics, such pleasant evenings in the old parlor, and now
and then such gay little parties at the great house.
plays rehearsed in the garret // bonnets and darned coats // laughing with friends by firelight // homemade Christmas decorations // snowball fights // skating on the river // playing tunes on the piano in the evenings // watching snow fall through lighted windows
The Winter of Enchantment by Victoria Walker

That night, as he was getting ready for bed, he looked up into the sky before drawing his curtains. The moon shone thin and silver through the still falling snow and it was almost new. “The snow should be quite deep by the morning,” he thought to himself, “and there will be a new moon this week.” He climbed into bed and fell straight to sleep.
mysterious dusty shops // snowy London streets // silent enchanted mansions // scarves and winter boots // frosty rooftops // dark candlelit parlors // tea and toast // scarlet dresses // dreamy moonlit adventures // shadows dancing on the wall

Good grief, the length this will be…. (I know, because in my customary fashion, I am doing the first bit last) Remember, you needn’t reply to the same tune, I have a notion your plate may not be exactly underwhelmed these days, and while cherries are nice, there ought not to be whole bunches topping schedules off😜
The words to go with the pictures here are almost music all their own to a word-lover’s heart, and the moodboards themselves are as good as a memory book…. Reminding you of some moments and making you wonder what happened in others🙃
And conveniently, Little Women is one of the first that comes to mind when thinking of winter books…. (Very appropriate, considering the moodboards😜) Particularly the day Beth went to visit the Hummels, and Jo found her in the closet, for some inexplicable reason. Why not the day Amy fell through the ice, one must wonder? But no, the Hummels and Belladonna it is.
Furthermore, hmm🤔🤔 The Anne books (as well as The Blue Castle) have got SUCH lovely wintery pieces in them, they must be included… and beyond that, for the moment, I find myself coming up empty. (What an predicament for a bookworm to find herself in)
Ahhh…. “These are a few of my favourite things….” A few, not a many, or we shall all be removed from the premises by a great flood of many words taking up all the room in it. We shall stop talking about it now, too, lest it should happen…. (Yikes, but I think an apology really is in order for the length😬 Can you tell I haven’t scribbled for too long?)
Ahem, yes. So. Favourite things about winter. The winter palette of pastels, the exquisitely and indescribably soft shades of those uncapturable sunsets all but glowing on the snow…. And the exhilaration of snowmobiles and sledding, though it’s been awhile for those! (One doesn’t expect Anne Girls to like such things, does one?)
Alright, what a ramble that was…. I believe I shall go to bed now, and see if your blog accepts this as an At All Reasonable Comment To Submit.
As it turns out, my schedule has been forcibly decluttered somewhat for the moment, because I have unfortunately fallen prey to a Nasty and Tenacious Illness. (I do feel like I’m at least on the upswing today, though, so that at least is comforting.)
Eeep, I’m so glad you liked them! Little Women is very wintery. That is Facts. I find I especially associate the first few chapters in general with winter…which is why more than one picture on the moodboard is from one of those early scenes 😛
It’s funny, but I could never associate the Anne books with winter in my mind…I think the Overall Vibe for me is just too sunny, or something. (Though there are a couple individual books that my mind can accept as more wintery, like Anne of Windy Poplars or Rilla of Ingleside.) The Blue Castle I can see, as well, though interestingly enough I find that my mind doesn’t really associate it with any particular season.
Oh, the aesthetics of winter are one of my favorite things too! So beautiful. And I’ve always loved sledding, though I have not as yet gotten the chance to snowmobile 😉
Oh dear, this sounds like an Extremely Unpleasant way to clear a schedule, how extremely uncivilized of it😳😳 I do hope a Committee has been formed for the Care Taking and Ministering To of Afflicted Members??
Chicken soup and much rest, my friend, and be you well soon…
One of them is of cream and muffins being taken to the Muffets, no? I was sure I recognized one or two 😉
It IS just brimming over with sunshine and lightness, isn’t it? From the very first chapter…. I can see why🙃 But visions were dancing in my head of Anne by the fire with a plate of Russets, just before Diana dashed in when Minnie May had the croup, and then there are the times of sleigh rides and Marilla declaring Anne will catch her death of cold…. And so it was Connected!
Ooh, but if you never have, you should! (She says, quoting Dr. Seuss, who goes on to say “these things are fun, and fun is good.”) If you enjoy a touch of adrenaline in the least little bit at all, which you well might, taking the sledding into consideration😉
Muffets, she says, (probably we can blame this on Sally, or perhaps Ned) as if they weren’t Hummels all the time…. Provided I have jotted THAT down correctly in my mind….
Oh yes; all has been most satisfactory and kind regarding care given. (And rest has been taken as much as possible…though sadly school deadlines are rather harsh and inflexible, so I can’t have a COMPLETE rest. But close enough, you know.)
Yes, the taking-breakfast-to-the-Hummels scene (hehe yes, I don’t think the Moffats would have needed it quite so much ;)) features prominently – in my head and in the moodboard.
Oh, I can certainly understand, since there are many iconic wintery scenes throughout AGG! The overall Aesthetic just didn’t strike me as wintery, is all.
Tehee, I know that quote well…’tis from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, is it not? That was a staple in our household growing up 😛
Ahhh, zis ist goot. (And the accent, I know not from whence and why it popped up. But it is there. So.) Shame on school schedules for not being more understanding, though! I hope the rest you did get has you completely recovered by this point?
😆No, I really think they might have been quite well supplied already, and so Amy’s sacrifice would have been in vain…. Much better the Hummels should have it 😉
The general feel of the thing, no? I quite understand about those 😉
Ahhh I can’t believe you recognized that!!! Paging through it in my mind, (because, of course and obviously, it was at our house too) I think it really must be…. Somewhere in with “Look what we found in the park, in the dark. We will take him home, we will call him Clark,” I believe…. Funny the things you don’t forget just because you grew out of them😜
Well, I still have a lingering congestion/cough – but I’m close enough to recovered that I’m pretty much just pretending that I *am* recovered. 😛
Yes indeed – I think their generosity would have been a little less needed in that quarter (;
Oh yes, that’s definitely One Fish Two Fish. “He will live at our house. He will grow and grow. Will our mother like this? We don’t know.” It’s Good Stuff. That’s why it stays in one’s brain, I think. ;P
Seeing as it was the next best thing to better…. Those CAN stick around much too long after you think you’re otherwise recovered! But hopefully, somewhere in the seven days it’s been since, that’s also a thing of the past now….
AhHAH, ohhh it’s nice to find that someone else who can quote him on the spot😂 He does not get enough credit, I think…. There really is an astonishing amount of wisdom in with his creatures and nonsense sometimes!
This is SO pretty. I love when people make aesthetics like this, although I don’t somehow have the patience? or skill? to successfully do it myself. Also, I knew nothing about The Winter of Enchantment before seeing this, but now I deeply want to read it despite…still knowing nothing about it. (But seriously, I think that’s my favorite of the three. So beautiful.)
Thank you so much! I only began trying my hand at them myself a few months ago…they do take way too long to make though, lol. I really recommend The Winter of Enchantment! It’s a children’s fantasy, and is really charming and endearing in its creativity and atmosphere-painting and just its overall Vibes. (It’s also very palpably British. Which I find fun.)
This is lovely, Lizzie! Thank you so much for sharing! I love the quotes, pictures and themes that you picked!
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoyed it 😀
How beautiful, Lizzie! Thanks so much for putting these together. 😀
Thank you; so glad you enjoyed ’em! ;D
These are lovely! I especially liked the Little Women one. It’s very wintery and I envy them their snow! The Christmas part of the 2019 film version is very pretty to look at, too (I like their knitted shawls 😉 ).
Thank you so much! The film versions tend to have such lovely wintery and Christmassy scenes…I think I have pictures from four different film versions in there, heh.
I have never heard of The Winter of Enchantment, but it looks lovely! In fact, they all do! What a mervelous idea, and especially marvelous are the words underneath the pictures. Words, beautiful words. 🙂
Thanks so much, I’m so glad you enjoyed them! And I definitely recommend The Winter of Enchantment. It’s fairly obscure, but it’s such a charming magical book.
