I wanted a post celebrating the beautiful season that is autumn, and eventually I hit on the idea of autumn-themed period drama mood boards. Part of the credit for this inspiration goes to a random denizen of the Internet who made a summer-themed Jeeves and Wooster mood board (which I did not save the link for – apologies that I cannot give credit where credit is due). I also got the idea for the format of this post from a post of Olivia’s at Meanwhile in Rivendell (unfortunately I can’t direct you to the exact post…I spent a long time looking for it and could not find it. Blast and botheration).
So if autumn aesthetics and period drama aesthetics are Your Thing, hope you enjoy! (I apologize that there are only three…if people enjoy these, maybe I’ll try my hand at some more.) (Also, I know LOTR technically isn’t a period drama, but I don’t think the Period Drama Police will mind too much, so we’re good.)
Anne of Green Gables
“Dear old world,” she murmured, “you are very lovely, and I am glad to be alive in you.”
leaves crunching under your feet // late nights studying and eating apples // warm sweaters // wind moaning at your window at night // woodfires // hot tea and freshly-bakes pies // frosty mornings // melancholy remembrances
Jeeves and Wooster
It was one of those days…when the sun beams, the birds toot, and there is a bracing tang in the air that sends the blood beetling briskly through the veins.
quiet old libraries // cocktails and cigarettes // pearl necklaces // drives in the English countryside // trench coats and leather gloves // afternoons golfing // reading mystery stories by the fire at night // evenings at the club listening to jazz bands
The Lord of the Rings
He found himself wondering at times, especially in the autumn, about the wild lands, and strange visions of mountains that he had never seen came into his dreams.
cozy hobbit holes // steaming tea and cider // harvesting and feasting // walking under the stars // pale misty mornings // dreaming of the far off and long ago // mysterious forest paths // elves singing melancholy songs in the trees
This is my first time making mood boards or doing a post of this sort, so please tell me what you think/any improvements I could make/any fictional universes you’d like me to do in the future!
What’s your favorite thing about autumn? What are your favorite stories that make you think of autumn?

I love this post, Lizzie! Thank you so much for writing it! The pictures were just amazing. 🙂 Especially the Anne of Green Gables ones.
Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I was especially pleased with how the Anne one came out 😀
(How would you like a very long comment? Because it looks as though I had one of those up my sleeve, and now here it is :P)
Ohhh these are lovely, Lizzie!! I think you have a knack for this sort of thing…. I like them very much, indeed I do.
Hmmm, favourite stories including autumn….
I’m thinking of Anne and Diana’s walk to Echo Lodge, although all of a sudden I have no evidence to back up the notion that it was even autumn in this scene🤔 Also I cannot find it, which adds to the difficulty😆
The flavour of the air, I think. That must be it.
That marvellous, enlivening tang that seems to accompany the sunshine, itself washing over everything with a brilliance peculiar to autumn. And the thrill of industriousness that comes with getting the garden and crops off and ready for winter…. In short, most everything about it (;
Long comment are lovely comments 😉
You know, I actually don’t associate the first trip to Echo Lodge with autumn…but I have no idea if my remembrance is correct or not! I thought it was spring, but I also have absolutely no evidence to back that up xD Maybe at some point I’ll thumb through the book and see what it actually was, heh.
That crisp tang in the air is one of my favorite things about autumn too…though I also like so many things about it! It’s just such a lovely season in every way.
Oh, these are so dreamy! Anne of Green Gables is perfect for any season, and The Fellowship of the Ring is so autumnal I could CRY. (Oh, wait, was this meant to encapsulate the trilogy? My mind just jumped to FotR and stayed there :P)
Hmm . . . I can’t decide on a specific book, but I feel like Dickens could give off pretty strong fall vibes?
Happy fall, Lizzie!
Heh, well, FotR is the one book of LOTR that actually does mostly take place in autumn, so it makes sense that your mind jumped there ;P
I thought of Dickens too, but I also couldn’t think of which specific book I would do. I usually associate Dickens with grimy cold London streets, heh…but I’m sure he has some stories which are set in a more picturesque autumn setting ;P
Same to you!
This was a lovely post – yes, do make more like this!! I love the collage layout that you chose for the first one (my favorite one of the three) – they are absolutely wonderfully done!!
One of my favorite things about fall is the chilly air at night! I love to breathe that cool air – it’s so invigorating!! Hmmm….favorite stories – how about Little Women? It’s such a cozy read, (though it probably follows all the seasons 🙂
Thank you so much! I think I will have to do another post like this, since you ladies are being so lovely and encouraging <3
Oh, I love that too! And Little Women is a great idea! You're right, it probably could work for all the seasons...I especially associate it with winter, so maybe I could make a winter mood board for it 😀
Ooh, I’d love to see a Little Women winter mood board!! I think it fits perfectly in winter as well! Probably more so than fall…:)
Ooh, how beautiful! Thanks muchly, Lizzie 😀
I hope you don’t mind, but I may be stealing some of these… autumn is such a lovely season! I’d say all of these encapsulate the autumnal feeling quite well—also, I don’t know if this has a specific setting, but Much Ado About Nothing has such autumnal feeling to me as well ;P
By all means, steal away! (If you could just credit them if you use them for anything online, that’d be lovely.) Ooh, I can see that…actually, I could see Much Ado working for almost every season (just not winter…just doesn’t fit the vibe somehow).
Of course! 🙂
Yes indeed, that’s very true.
