Ask Me Anything Answers (Part 2): In Which I Reveal My Ignorance on Fashion & Wax Eloquent About Tea

Pride and Prejudice meme

First things first: happy Thanksgiving! I hope you’re having a lovely day, whether it’s a quieter more restful Thanksgiving or a busier day catching up with family. Second things second: I’ve finally returned with the rest of my Ask Me Anything answers. (One more thing to be thankful for.)

Ruth

11. What is a movie youโ€™re (almost) always in the mood to watch?

This is actually harder to answer than you might think. At first I thought of saying All About Eve, but while it’s one of my favorite movies it’s a little…well, intense implies that it’s action-packed, which it isn’t. But it’s psychologically intense, and while I’m all for that much of the time, there are some times when I want something fluffier. That being said, there are certain things that are so very fluffy that I don’t really want to watch them when my spirits don’t need lightening…so we need to find something that neatly balances those two extremes.

I think I’ll choose The Music Man and You Were Never Lovelier, both classic Hollywood musicals. While there are things about The Music Man that annoy me, it’s so funny and sunny and happy that it’s a joy to watch. I can’t think of many moods in which I wouldn’t enjoy it. You Were Never Lovelier is a newer find for me, but I’ve already pestered I don’t know how many people recommending it. It’s one of those movies that immediately clicked for me and is already a top comfort movie. It has a sort of subdued, laid-back feel that I really like (and which I think is uncommon for the genre), beautiful dancing, and just the right balance of humor and romance and shimmery glamorous aesthetic.

You Were Never Lovelier

Not to mention some pretty great quotes.

12. What is your favorite kind of tea?

Probably chai. I love it deeply. I also discovered the website Adagio Teas a couple years ago, which has greatly enriched my life – it’s sort of like an open-source tea website, where as well as buying standard tea flavors, anybody can create their own tea mixes and then buy the tea that they – or anyone else – has created. I haven’t created any teas there myself, but I’ve really enjoyed other people’s tea mixes that I’ve bought there. I got a Victorian Christmas tea blend last year which was absolutely delicious, and I’m entranced by all the fandom teas they sell (they have Les Mis tea, guys. And Agnes Wickfield tea. And Jeeves and Wooster tea, the delightful tastes of which I can personally vouch for).

13. If I may play off Emiโ€™s question, who would you nominate as the most fabulous character in American literature?

We do indeed, as you pointed out, have a deficit in this department…which makes this a hard question. Especially since the amount of American literature I have personally read is rather meager. The only good answer I can think of is the Ingalls, though I don’t know if they count since they aren’t fictional. Laura is wonderful, of course, and one realizes as one gets older just how fantastic Pa and Ma are. They are absolutely inspirational, both as individuals and as a couple.

14. What is one modern fashion trend/style/etc that you do like very much (if there are any)? and one you hate?

To be perfectly honest with you, I don’t really know that much about modern fashions, beyond knowing that there’s a lot of leggings and very neutral colors and makeup that makes it look like your face is unnaturally shiny. From some (very cursory) research online, it looks like flowy things are a bit more “in” now? I like that.

And for something I hate, I think I will say the makeup. I feel like the fashionable thing is to have very neutral-colored makeup that somehow still looks very heavy and over-done, and I don’t like it.

15. What are your tips for beginner bloggers?

I don’t know how qualified I am to give blogging advice, but I suppose here goes:

1. If you want more people to read your blog, go read and comment on other people’s blogs. I’m not saying you have to explicitly ask people to read your blog, but if you don’t seek out and meet other people, they might quite simply not know you’re there.
2.ย ย I know everyone says this, but it’s true: don’t try to just do the same thing that your favorite blogger(s) does. Obviously you can be inspired by other people and you can write about things you think other people will find interesting, but write about subjects that interest you and in a style that really reflects you.

16. French or British accents, and why?

Both are lovely, but my preference is for British accents…I can’t give you an objective reason why. Perhaps partly because of my love for period dramas and Victorian English aesthetics and whatnot, and partly because I’m simply more familiar with British accents and more of my favorite actors/musicians/&c. have been British.

17. If you could change one particular thing about your looks, what would it be?

Truth be told, I don’t think I would change anything about my looks if I got the chance – not by any means because I don’t think I could be prettier, but because the way I look now is me. But if I were to change one thing…hm. Like Amy March, I’ve often longed for a more aristocratic nose, so maybe I’d go with that. Oh, or wait, I could change my hair texture so that it could actually easily hold a curl. That’s a change that I actually might conceivably make if I could.

18. If you could go back in time to the year 2015, what one thing would you do differently since now youโ€™ve seen whateverโ€™s happened since?

I would try to engrain some good mental habits of self-discipline and will power. ‘Tis a useful thing to have, as Frog and Toad could tell you.

19. Is there any particular question youโ€™ve been hoping nobody will ask, and if so, what is it?

Well, I had the caveat that I wouldn’t feel the need to answer any question I thought too personal, so if there were any question I didn’t feel like answering I could have copped out with that excuse. (Which is in itself a vague cop-out answer to the question – how recursive, as my philosophy major brothers would say.)

Hannah

20. Whoโ€™s your favourite character that youโ€™ve created?

What a great question! That’s hard…hm. I might say Katinka, the main character of my most recent story project (who I talked about here). While Katinka is not the same personality as me, she and I think very similarly in some ways, and writing about her is sometimes just like spilling my own musings and way of seeing things onto paper.

There was also a story I began maybe seven or eight years ago which featured an affable, slightly smart-alecky talking rabbit named Canberra, and I must say he is still a favorite character of mine.

21. Whatโ€™s a compliment youโ€™ve never forgotten?

I don’t know if this counts as a compliment…but I’ve always remembered an incident that happened when I was thirteen and went to a church event with my dad and a couple brothers, and a lady there thought that I was a married adult. She didn’t mean it as a compliment per se, but I found that fairly flattering, since evidently she thought I seemed mature enough to be an adult.

22. If you could have chosen your name, what would it be?

I love the name I have and I wouldn’t want another one, but if I had to choose one…hm. I feel like I said Eleanor in answer to this or a similar question before, and I think Maria would be a lovely choice too. (The frustrating thing is that I’m certain I had been thinking about this very thing not too long ago and that I had chosen something, but now I can’t remember what. Ah well. If I remember it before I press “publish” I’ll add it.)

23. How do you picture your life when youโ€™re 60?

To be perfectly honest, I really couldn’t tell you. I could see my life going so many different directions. Maybe I and my delightful husband will be smiling fondly at the doings of our adult children. Maybe I’ll be that slightly weird single aunt who’s obsessed with old movies and is always puttering in the kitchen. Maybe I’ll be running a cozy school/semi-orphanage like Jo did with Plumfield. Who knows? I don’t.

24. What colour is your favourite song?

What an awesome question! The problem is that this implies that I know what my favorite song is…and that’s nigh impossible to figure out. I feel like a lot of my favorites are a sort of light yellow or light lavender color, but then there are my angstier favorites, which are probably more of a dark green or a navy blue.

25. Who would you have narrate your autobiography (in the alternate reality that you have one)?

Ooh…let me think. I’ve only seen her in the ’08 Sense and Sensibility, but judging from that I think Hattie Morahan would do a wonderful job. I think she’d have a good mix of humor, common sense, and sensitivity which I would appreciate in someone narrating my (absolutely enthralling, of course) life story. Plus she’s got a great accent.

26. What about your life would you never want to change?

Among many other things I wouldn’t want to change, I would never want to live in a place where I didn’t get all four seasons. I need snow in the winter, and I need the leaves to turn in the autumn.

27. If your life was a movie, what song would be in the end credits?

Wow, you keep asking such great questions, Hannah! This is a bit different than my usual song choices, but I think I’ll chose “After the Rain” by Laura Bretan. I don’t know that I’ve ever mentioned Laura Bretan on my blog before, but I go through phases of listening to her a lot., She has a breathtakingly beautiful voice and also seems like a genuinely really sweet person, which is always nice. And this particular song would work excellently, I think.

After the rain, the sun comes shining in
After the rain, all things are new again
You stand with me, in the middle of the storm
And when my strength is gone
You give me Yours
The sky is so much bluer than before
After the rain

28. Whatโ€™s your favourite thing about being Catholic?

I’ll take this as being more my favorite ‘aesthetic’ thing, as it were, not so much why I’m Catholic. I might say all the tradition – there’s something so simultaneously comforting and awe-inspiring about knowing that generations upon generations of people came before you in the same Faith, praying the same prayers, attending the same Masses, celebrating the same feast days.

29. What do you miss about your childhood?

Well, lots of things – I think most of us probably look back at our childhood with rose-colored glasses to a certain extent. But one thing I miss the most is the sheer level of excitement I could achieve as a kid. Even with wonderful things like Christmas – which I still (of course) highly enjoy – I’m not usually able to work myself up to the fervor of excitement that I could as a child. Which is sad.

Well, I think I’ve finally reached the end. Thank you all so much for participating in my first Ask Me Anything attempt; it was a lot of fun!

What are your favorite accents? What colors are your favorite songs? And what are some things you’re grateful for this Thanksgiving?

My favorite accent is hands down British!! For likely the same reasons as you. My favorite song…is probably light blue?? Like the sky?? (not me avoiding choosing an actual favorite by generalizing the vibes on my playlist) And I’m thankful for my blogging buddies, books, Josiah Queen, my family, Anne of Green Gables, my IRL besties, homemade bread, and my journals.

    • Lizzie Hexam

Heh, I did a very similar work-around for the favorite song question ๐Ÿ˜› And those are all wonderful things to be thankful for! <3

  2. Emi

Ooh, wonderful post again, Lizzie!! Those PICTURES… I love that I get the Have You Seen My Ring one thanks to you ๐Ÿ˜› And the Door/Window/Floor one is absolutely priceless, I would adopt it if I could๐Ÿ˜‚

*Goes off to hunt up Laura Bretan, because she sounds like my cup of tea*

Ooh, accents… I’m gonna go with one that’s just fun to listen to myself, and say Brooklyn… And those very slightly southern ones that just sound warm๐Ÿ˜„ Oh, and Irish!!

The colour of a song, I LOVE that๐Ÿ˜ฏ (It sounds related to the number-picture thing :P) Mine tend to be deep, warm ambers, the palest of sky blues, and various shades of delicate pastels…

Ooh, thankful list! Well, shall we say… Two thanksgivings in one year?? And the fact that convenience stores at least sell ice cream the day of, when alllll the other stores and restaurants are closed, and you didn’t know that Americans took Thanksgiving QUITE so seriously… XD

Anyway ๐Ÿ˜› Bee-yoo-ti-fully done, I love this kind of post! I’m always discovering new things about you in them, and it’s such fun…๐Ÿ˜„

And apparently I have made this an especially long email to make up for lost time…

    • Lizzie Hexam

I’m glad that you liked them (; You can certainly adopt the door/window/floor picture if you like; I swiped it from someplace online myself, heh. I think Laura Bretan would be your cup of tea! Let me know if you like her ๐Ÿ˜€

Oh, those are all great choices! Isn’t it neat just how many accents there are, and how very different they can be from each other? And ooh, that sounds like a beautiful song color palette! (I just love shades of amber…so warm and beautiful.)

Ah yes, because your Thanksgiving is earlier (in October, if I’m remembering rightly?). Am I interpreting correctly, then, that your vacation in Parts Unknown is somewhere in the good old US of A?

Aw, thank you! <3 (Oh, and don't worry about that - I've been shamefully slow in Bloggish Things for quite some time at this point :P)

      • Emi

Why thank you, in that case, I shall look for a place to use it the very first chance I get ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ohhh my goodness… Well, you were right! She’s got such a pure, beautiful voice, and suits my tastes exactly…. I’m so glad you mentioned her!

Very! It fascinates me how accurately you can tell where someone is from simply by the way they talk ๐Ÿ™‚ (Right?? It’s such a warm, satisfyingly comfortable colour…)

You’re making a habit of being right about things in this comment๐Ÿ˜„Yes, ours is in October! And indeed you were interpreting correctly, I was busily enjoying a taste of your more northern-ish midwest… (Which, it may be added, I absolutely loved!)

Perhaps I shall give myself leave not to feel quite so bad about being miles behind myself, then ๐Ÿ˜›

(Also. Where DO I get off calling comments emails, anyway๐Ÿ˜ณ๐Ÿ˜† Apparently my thoughts were taking some sort of unadvisable shortcut XD)

        • Lizzie Hexam

Oh, I’m so glad you liked the introduction! I rather thought she would suit your tastes (:

I know, accents are so fascinating, aren’t they? Oh, I’m glad you enjoyed your taste…next time you drop over the border you should swing by my house for a visit ;D

By all means do give yourself that leave, and heh, our thoughts DO take shortcuts of that kind, don’t they? Which can be quite useful sometimes, but other times not so much ;P

          • Emi

She does indeed, I will have to get into the habit of her, I think ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ooh, wouldn’t I just love to! Thanks most awfully for the invitation, I shall have to see what I can do about that๐Ÿ˜„

Apparently they do! Mine have been doing it an alarming amount these days, even extending to my hands, and it’s a little disconcerting to find one’s fingers typing things one never told them to XD Which being one of the Not Quite So Useful times ๐Ÿ˜›

  3. Ruth

ADAGIO TEAS? LIZZIE DO YOU NOT KNOW THE TEMPTATION THIS IS FOR ME??

Hmm, the Ingalls are a tricky one. (I mean, an excellent choice. But tricky for this question.) I was musing over this question myself, and I think my vote would go to Atticus Finch from *To Kill a Mockingbird*.

British accents are just . . . delightful. Modern fashion is not.

Oh! That’s so funny about your accidental compliment. I think that is flattering indeed! (When I was fourteen, we were visiting a church, and someone thought my brother and I were a couple. I couldn’t decide if I was tickled, flattered, or appalled.)

I love what you said about Christian tradition! I wish more Protestant churches were more intentional about tradition.

    • Lizzie Hexam

I’M SORRY. I guess now we can just be tempted together. ๐Ÿ˜›

I have yet to read To Kill a Mockingbird (it’s on my TBR!) but from what I know Atticus Finch would be an excellent choice too. (Have you watched the movie version? I want to, but I want to read the book first.)

Yes indeed. On both counts. *nods sagely*

Oh, that is funny! xD I would take that as a compliment…just an amusing one. ;D For some reason people seemed to consistently think me older than I was throughout my high school years…perhaps just because I liked dressing reasonably nicely? I don’t know.

Yes, tradition is so important! And so many traditional practices are just so beautiful; it’d be such a shame to lose them.

      • Ruth

Well, being tempted together is some consolation ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I don’t know how long I can last without giving into temptation…

I haven’t seen the movie yet! I really want to! I am a wee bit nervous that it won’t have the resonance that the book did, though. (The book floored me, it must be said. I was expecting it to be Good, but I was not expecting it cut to my heart the way it did.)

Interesting! Perhaps that’s the key, especially in this day and age. That didn’t happen to me a lot in highschool, but since I started college it’s been happening allll the time XD

(Oh, I forgot to mention this–we used “After the Rain” in one of our dance recitals! I wasn’t in the dance, but I got thrown in last minute to sit on the stage for Character Reasons. Laura Bretan’s voice *is* so pretty! ๐Ÿ˜)

        • Lizzie Hexam

Well, the way I see it, fandom teas would make wonderful Christmas presents…but if you buy some as gifts, you’d have to buy some for yourself too, to hide your tracks when the package arrives. So that solves that issue. ;P

I can understand that…with really great works of literature, I feel like it’s rare for even good movie adaptations to be able to quite capture just what made the original book so good.

(Oh, that’s so neat! Her voice is so lovely, isn’t it?)

          • Ruth

            I always knew you were a genius ;D ;D

          • Lizzie Hexam

Heh, when it comes to thinking up ways to spend money on tea with a clear conscience, at least ;D

  4. Liz Churchill

    Hey Lizzie!

Such a fun read – love the meme at the beginning!!

My top three favorite accents: Irish (Dublin), Russian, and Mid-Atlantic (think Cary Grant).

Hm… For some reason I feel like the color navy suits Big Band/Swing – most of my favorite songs come from this era.

I am grateful for my family and all my friends (old and new!)!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Have a great day!

    • Lizzie Hexam

      It’s a great one, isn’t it? xD

Great choices! Mid-Atlantic accents are great – it’s kind of a shame that didn’t stick around. Oh, you’re right – I feel like navy or maybe a deep brick red works well for big band music. (Now I’m rethinking my answer, since a lot of my favorite songs are from that era too!)

Ah, wonderful things to be thankful for! <3

      Same to you!

  5. Ooh how delightful! I loved reading your answers ๐Ÿ˜€

ADAGIO TEA?! I just looked it up and 1) it uses a MUSIC word as the name and 2) SELLS LES MIS TEA?! Yes. Please.

Oh, and British accents. I will never get tired of hearing British accents.

(And I quite agree about modern fashion. I should like to dress more like the 1880s, please.)

  6. I may also find it necessary to temporarily borrow this ideaโ€ฆ I hope you donโ€™t mind ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Lizzie Hexam

I know, right?? How could that not be delightful? (And considering the fact that it’s Special Snazzy Tea, it’s not even that expensive…it’s $6 for a sample tin, which it claims on the website is enough for 5 cups, but if memory serves it actually made about twice that much.)

(Yes indeed…there’s so much lovely fashion from the past couple hundred years; why can’t we borrow more from that nowadays?)

Of course; borrow away! As with most fun blogging ideas, I got the idea from other bloggers to start with anyway ๐Ÿ˜›

  7. I have been very behind in commenting! Sorry!

That door picture made me laugh out loud. And I don’t like leggings, either… or dull heavy make-up.

That frog picture is very sadly relatable… XP. And tradition is a great thing. We saw a book of Gregorian chant in a museum a while back and realised it was the music we’d been singing a month before (and then had to drag our other sister away before she started singing it). Oh, and your answer about your life when you’re 60 also made me chuckle (I have a feeling that been a slightly weird single aunt would be quite fun. Knitting Things for your extended family who have to take it, for instance, or going for random trips for no reason…)

Sorry again for the length of time it took me to comment – I had to try and make people buy Christmas cards at the weekend and couldn’t then…

    • Lizzie Hexam

Oh, no worries! I have been absolutely atrocious with prompt commenting of late…

No indeed…although leggings are useful sometimes for wearing underneath skirts; I prefer tights, but where I live it’s too cold to use them *all* the time.

Oh, that’s such a neat story about the Gregorian chant! It could be rather fun, couldn’t it? Though I wouldn’t like living all by myself. Maybe if the need arises we can team up and be weird single aunts together ;D

Heh, that sounds like an exciting time…did you succeed?

      • Yay, I wear them under skirts too… I vacillate between seizing the opportunity to wear funky socks with them (as I don’t have another chance as I’m either wearing tights or no socks the rest of the year) or black socks because I want to pretend they’re tights…

Let’s do that thing! We can have cats, drink tea, bake biscuits, and drive to Mass in an elderly car… sounds pretty ideal to me! (Though maybe you don’t like cats? In which case, we’ll have to think of something else. :P)

No, I didn’t!! I sold ten out of the 200 we had XD. Next year, perhaps…

        • Lizzie Hexam

Heh, I understand that dilemma…I have a lot of very flamboyant socks, and it’s always a struggle to know when/if to wear them. I usually only wear them when I know my boots would cover them up…which is boring, but oh well.

Let’s do it! Oh, oh, and can the car be a 1950s Cadillac? I’ve always wanted one. (I sometimes like cats…it really all depends on the cat. If we get a Nice cat or two, I’d be happy. (Would it be weird if we had rats? I have a great fondness for them…though come to think of it, it might not be the best idea to have cats AND rats. :P))

Oh well…that’s right, maybe next year. And ten is still ten better than none ๐Ÿ˜€
